GUIDE DOGS:   In 2004, the KGC Roundtable officially recognized Southeastern Guide Dogs, Inc., as a sanctioned project for the Charity Committee.

Mission:   To create and nurture a partnership between a visually impaired individual and a guide dog, facilitating life's journey with mobility, independence and dignity.

Southeastern Guide Dogs is located in Palmetto, FL, on a 92-acre campus.   You may visit any day of the week, except Thursdays, from 9 to 11 AM.   You may walk a dog in training or hug a puppy.   SEGD provides the guide dog, equipment, single-room lodging, all meals, outings, instruction and post-graduation support completely free of charge, thanks to the generosity of our contributors.

The average working life of a guide dog is eight years, and the majority of our graduates obtain multiple guide dogs from SEGD.   The process of developing and serving a successful guide dog team takes an average of ten years (two years of training and eight years of post-graduation services) and approximately $60,000.

"Paws for Independence", like all programs at SEGD, receives no governmental funding. We rely solely on the generosity of people like YOU.   The Roundtable Charity has funded a total of nine Puppies since 2004 for a 2010 total donation of $16,000.   We currently have Squire in GD school, Queen as a Breeder dog and Artie has just started his training at 9 weeks old. To name a Puppy of 2012 we need to fund a sponsorship of $2,500.   Our one day $Fundraiser$ will be February 11, 2012 at Coffee, and we solicit your support.   Please make your checks to: KGC Roundtable and make memo to SEGD.   Cash of course is always welcome.   Nip Barker, GD Chairman

EDITOR'S NOTE:   In today's world, scams abound, as we know from Art Grams' good tips.   The best advice:  be vigilant and use common sense.   For instance, if you receive a phone call from your bank, telling you there is a problem with your account, hang up, and call your bank.   If you receive a call saying a relative (perhaps a grandchild), is in trouble and needs money, first check with your family.   If you receive a call supposedly from a company like Microsoft, asking you to open your computer to them, "to fix a problem you might have", be wary and hang up the phone (a resident has learned that this is happening in the UK).   If you receive a questionable e-mail, from what you believe is a reputable company, beware.   I recently received an e-mail (with an attachment), apparently from American Airlines, supposedly confirming a reservation that I had not made.   I called American Airlines and was told not to open the attachment and to delete the e-mail (it was obvious that this is an ongoing scam).   I also checked my bank and credit card statements, to be sure I had not been billed for some fraudulent reservation.   Be alert if you receive calls from a company saying they are inspecting homes or roofs, in KGC; hang up, and call the KGC office, as they may be able to confirm the company's credentials.       --sl
