Vol. XXII, No. 16 King's Gate Club - a 55+ community, Nokomis, Florida April 25, 2009

BON VOYAGE to the cruisers and all those traveling north for the summer.

THANKS to all the wonderful people who have helped me, in so many ways, since I fell last week.   Your cards, calls, visits, food and prayers are so very, deeply appreciated.       -- Angie Richards

THANKS:   To live among thoughtful and caring people is to feel the love of God.   John and I have experienced that love in so many, many ways from so many, many KGC people over the past several weeks.   John is back from the University of Miami Hospital and is now in Manor Care.   We are humbled by your support, goodness, kindness and our hearts are filled with gratitude.   Thank you, thank you King's Gate people.       -- Pat Sellner

BOOK CLUB will meet on Monday, April 27 at 1:00 PM in the Book & Game Room.   Shirley DePasquale will lead the discussion of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith.   This will be the last Book Club meeting until October.       -- Sandy McIntyre

POOL EXERCISE will be held at 8:30 AM, beginning May 4th.       -- Bob Johnson

MOVEMENT FOR HEALTH:   This class will resume in the fall.       - Gigi Conway

MILITARY TRIBUTE:   Thanks so much for the enthusiastic response to this project.   All you need to do is to send me a 3 x 5 photo, with an addition or an index card stating: name and rank, career or assignment, station and relation to you.   Jean Oakley has offered to send birthday cards, so we will need an extra index card with complete address and the birth date on the reverse side.   Pictures should be non-returnable (no 8 x 10's please).   I hope to continue this in the fall.       -- Betty Dowling

VENICE AREA HISTORICAL SOCIETY:   This group is having two programs on "Descendants of Venice/Nokomis Pioneers".   They will meet on Tuesday, April 28, and on Tuesday, May 26.   Both meetings will be at 7:00 PM at Mark Manor, Village On The Isle, in Venice.   These programs are open to the public.   Refreshments will follow each program.       -- Vicky May

DVD LIBRARY:   Three more DVDs have been cleaned, to be put back on the shelf:   DVD 266 - No Country for Old Men,  DVD 272 - Juno and DVD 298 - Get Smart.   If these do not work in your DVD player, then please get the device to clean your DVD player.   After listing 29 missing DVDs, 17 were returned and 12 are still missing. Those still missing will be deleted from the list on the web site and also from the new list when it is printed for the Book.   I like to wait until the academy award nominations, to see the choices for Best Actress/Actor/Movie, etc. You will see that we have purchased a lot of these movies. This week in the DVD library you will find The Reader.   This movie contains nudity, and I have noted that on the card.   If this offends you, PLEASE DO NOT check out this movie .   The Wrestler also contains some nudity.   Sex and The City has been checked out 38 times, so a lot of people must enjoy this type of DVD.   We ALL cannot like every movie I purchase, but I am trying my best to offer a range of all types of movies.   Also purchased Frost/Nixon, based on the David Frost interview with Richard Nixon. These movies had been nominated for Best Actor/Actress/Movie, etc.   We now have Doubt and Slumdog Millionaire in our library, and again these movies were either nominated or won awards.   I have on order Gran Torino and Curious case of Benjamin Buttons.   On the request list was a Charles Dickens Series, Little Dorritt (5 discs).   It is now on order also.   Once again, if a movie is not in the case, please call the person who had it last and see if they have the DVD.  If they do not have  it, then put a note on it, and I will take it out of the library.   I have purchased 95% of the movies that were requested by our residents.       -- Jean Ickes

TRAVEL:   The travel desk is on vacation but will return to the area on May 2, 2009.   We have two great cruises coming up, and we need your name on the list.
Sept. 2009 Cruise:  The Best of the Baltic with Princess Cruises, two nights in Denmark, including Scandinavia, Russia, and Oslo, Norway.   All details are on the web page and the travel board in the clubhouse.
Feb. 20-27, 2010: Oasis of the Sea, one of the newest and largest ships.   It will be a real experience on this Royal Caribbean ship.  Information on Travel board and web page, www.kgc.cc, and click on the ship.   Our ports are St. Thomas, St Maarten and Nassau, Bahamas, but on this cruise you can enjoy the ship and don't have to leave it at all.
Call VIP World Travel (377-0027 or 1-800-323-7448 nationwide), let them know you are from King's Gate Club, what trip interests you, and they will get you booked.
Your Travel Coordinators,       Don and Mary Lou Richmond 484-6807 and John and Sandy Eade, Travel Partners 484-4440

CORRECTION:   The cart built by Vernon Crane was actually built for the "domino" tables.   But, as Barb Amatrudo says, others can use the tables, too.

ORCHIDS to Claire and Jerry Becker for chairing the Jetty Picnics.   They are always fun!   And, last Thursday there was an overflow crowd who enjoyed delicious food, good fellowship and great weather.   Thanks for your work.

THOUGHTS:   Today is a "bittersweet" day, as it is the last Saturday that Fred and I will be at the meeting until Fall.   It has been a great season, with so many activities that "there is something for everyone."   There is no place like King's Gate Club, and while it will be nice to be up north for a while, I can already hardly wait to get back to our "little bit of Paradise".   Everyone have a healthy summer, and if you are traveling, have a safe trip.   See you in October.       -- SJB
