FROM THE MANAGER: Received the following from Ms. Hurt, a property owner on King's Way, who is very concerned, as we all should be, about the location of the new jail. ---Charles Clotfelter
"Nokomis residents wake up; we may have a jail in our back yard! The Community Partners Work Group (CPWG) is in the process of completing the jail site valuations. Out of 11 proposed sites, 5 are located in the Nokomis area. Two of these sites received the first and third highest draft score, the highest score is the most favorable site. As the Board of County Commissioners will select 3 sites for further review, 2 of those sites may be in our area unless strongly opposed by our citizens.
History is repeating itself; in l997 the County proposed a jail here. This proposal was defeated because of the opposition of our citizens, lead by the Nokomis Area Civic Association (NACA). With pride the NACA Brochure reads "NACA has a tremendous track record of achievements," listing as #2: "Worked to keep new County jail out of Nokomis". As far as I can determine, it appears there will be no opposition leadership from NACA this time around, as the NACA president Mr. John Ask, is on the CPWG committee putting him in a neutral status, thus making him unable to lead any opposition from NACA to the jail in our area.
I therefore urge Nokomis and Laurel citizens to write the Commissioners and sign petitions against a jail in our area. To keep informed, go to www.scgov.net click J for jail. My daughter lives off Knights Trail; our family has owned property in area since l965. ---Sandra Hurt, Kings Way DR
