FLEA MARKET DONATIONS:   Linda MacMillan, Chair of the Flea Market, says donations are accepted year-around and are checked daily by Angie Richards, Dee Hicks or Fran Yaros.   Take the donations to the trailer by the wall.   Mike McDonald will be the summer contact for large or heavy donations.   This brings in a great deal of money for our Annual Fair.   New residents, if you have questions about what should be donated, check with any of these people.

THOUGHTS:   On April 1, I've been a resident of King's Gate Club for 18 years.  Where have the years gone?  And our Newsletter in its present form is now 17 years old - started by John Olson and Art Carlson, both now deceased.  I joined the staff two weeks after it started and have been on the staff since that time.  The years have seen many wonderful people leave, but always replaced by enthusiastic great new people.  Life at KGC is busy and fun.  And best of all are the wonderful friends.  This truly is a "Little Bit of Paradise" and we are fortunate to live here.  As a kid growing up, I certainly would not have even entertained a thought that I would be fortunate enough to live in Florida.                 ---SJB

MEMORIAL DAY POTLUCK / PICNIC "PARADE OF THE STATES":   Sign up on the bulletin board to attend on Monday, May 30.   The Parade of the States will be held during the Social Hour starting at 4:30 PM.  Then at 5:30 we'll eat grilled hamburgers and hotdogs (will be provided) and all the delicious picnic food everyone brings.   Cash donations will be accepted at the door.   A "Parade of the States" Memorial Day party was chaired by Pat Baxter about five years ago, and it was lots of fun.  Wear something reminiscent of your home state for the parade during social hour.  We'd like some volunteers to decorate a table (two tables end-to-end seating 16 people) to commemorate their home states.  Please sign up on the Table Decorating sheet on the bulletin board.  We also need volunteers to help with the potluck.  You can sign up on the bulletin board or give us a call.                    Sandy and Chuck McIntyre, 480-9503

FAREWELL PARTY:   The Farewell Party for Patty and George Ray, which was last Sunday afternoon at the clubhouse, was a huge success.  About 255 people attended, which is a real tribute to the Ray's.  The hors d'oeuvres were delicious and plentiful.  Music by Jay Smith was delightful and many people were on the dance floor.  The Planning Committee did a great job and we all thank them for their work.  The Ray's were presented with a monetary gift of $1,285.

THOUGHTS:   The Bethke's leave next week for the Summer - time to head north.  The season has gone just too fast.  As I look back, there have been sad times when we have lost residents due to death.  We've also had owners move to be nearer to their families.  We have a super Board of Directors and Round Table Committee, all of whom are volunteers working for our good.  Programs and activities have been plentiful and fun.  By the way, we have nice new owners moving into the Club.  Will miss you all and look forward to returning here in October.  Have a great Summer, stay well, and Fall will be here before we know it.                    --- SJB

ENJOY YOUR SUMMER!

KGC CLASSIC:   The following is an article that appeared in one of the earliest KGC Newsletters.
Legend of Shakett Creek (Excerpts from page 54 of The Story of Sarasota)
"…… The Knights suffered a minor disaster when they were almost in sight of the Gulf.  They came to a broad creek, near the head of Dona Bay, which they had to ford.  The mules pulling the leading buggy refused to budge.  Knight tried to coax them to enter the water by holding ears of corn in front of their mouths.  But the stubborn animals would not be tempted.  Whips were swung but still the mules stood rooted in their tracks.
Finally Knight had an idea.  He yelled to his oldest son: "Bill, in that second cart there's some dried deer hides.  You know, they make a wicked cracking noise when you handle them.  Get one of those hides and stand just behind those critters and then take the hide and sort of shake it - and sort of not shake it!"
Bill got the idea.  He hurried back to the cart, pulled out a large hide, and stood alongside the team of balky mules.  Then he shook the hide - not rather lightly, as his father had suggested, but with all his strength.  The shaking hide sounded like exploding firecrackers.  Frightened, the mules leaped forward, splashing though the creek.  Several other teams followed, also at a record pace.
The result was near catastrophe.  Two of the buggies and a heavily loaded cart upset in the creek and many of Knight's belongings went overboard.  Nearly everything was recovered but sopping wet.
Because of this proof of the super efficiency of shaken deer hides, the creek became know as Shakit Creek.  It still bears that name on many maps……"

REWARD OFFERED:  Jack and Lillian Jerome, owners of 235 Duchess for 18 years have moved to New York to be near their family.  The house was sold in March, at which time all the tools and woodworking equipment that Mr. Jerome used was still in their shed.  The new owner said they could leave it there until their sons came down to get it in April.  When their sons came down to pack their belongings, all of the tools and woodworking equipment were missing.  They are offering a $500.00 reward for information leading to the recovery of the woodworking tools and equipment that was removed sometime in March or early April.  Please contact Tom or Gigi Conway, 120 Camelot or call 488-7810 regarding this matter.

SECURITY:   Any questions regarding security for the summer please call either Dick Stratton, 219 Princess, 483-4582 or Chuck Leight, 162 Castle, 484-0162.

JACUZZI:   Starting on May 10, the Jacuzzi was closed and will remain closed until the enclosure work is completed.

KGC CLASSIC:
May 28, 1994 -  Road Work:  This paragraph is mainly for the snowbirds who have already left for the summer.  Those of us who are still here know first hand.  The County and State have finally started redoing Albee Farm Road.  Already the sides of the road look like logging country with trees and shrubs disappearing every day.  FP&L Co. is replacing poles with large concrete ones and putting them way back from the existing road.  They started near their substation and are working north from there.  Of course, there are traffic slow-downs when two flagmen wave you on or make you stop.  The job is scheduled to take a year so we will still have some inconvenience when you come back in the fall.
July 16, 1994 - Road Work:  Not much progress on the interchange at Laurel and I-75 but a lot of clearing and dirt moving has taken place for the 4 on and off ramps….. On Albee Farm Road it is a different story - pilings are being driven for the new bridge over the creek nearest Laurel, between there and Robbins Road all the residents front yards have been torn up by big backhoes and they dig ditches for four-foot diameter water pipe which is laid out all along the road, even up to Nokomis Groves.  There have been flagmen along this stretch because the dirt they dig up has been placed on the east lane.  FP&L has been busy switching wires from old poles to the new ones all along the road from one end to the other.  They haven't had any detours laid out yet but there probably will be once tearing up pavement begins.  In the meantime, the potholes and bumps in this road will go unattended, even as the existing road seems to be getting worse and worse.

FORMER RESIDENT NEWS:   We are sorry to report that long-time King's Gate Club resident, Don "Doc" Avery, formerly of 44 King Arthur Dr, passed away on Tuesday, May 17, while bowling with King's Gate bowlers in Venice.   We extend our sincere sympathy to his wife, Dorothy, and to their four children and their families.  Two of the Avery's daughters and their husbands are acquainted with many King's Gaters.  Sally and Brian Henderson are former residents of 147 Duchess Avenue.  Sandy and Wayne Titus also live nearby, and Sandy bowled with King's Gate in the past.   Cards may be sent to Dorothy Avery, Bay Village, Apt. 666, 8400 Vamo Road, Sarasota, FL 34231.   Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association.  A memorial service will be held this morning at 10:00 AM in the Chapel of the Church of the Palms - Presbyterian, 3224 Bee Ridge Road, Sarasota, which is located east of Tuttle Avenue and west of Beneva Road.
Doc pursued many interests after moving into one of the first four homes in King's Gate Club.  He and Dot were square dancers, golfers, tennis players, bowlers, travelers, and later in life he learned to play the organ and use a computer.  He was instrumental in building the KGC tennis courts and starting the KGC tennis program.  Doc participated in many Club activities and graciously provided helpful medical advice and assistance when requested.  Each month, he monitored the blood pressures of residents.  He was a good man, a perfect gentleman, and will be greatly missed.

NEW RESIDENTS:   We welcome the following new owners:

We hope you enjoy many happy years at Kings Gate Club.

THIS IS THE STORY OF FOUR PEOPLE:   Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody.   There was an important job to be done.  Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.  Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.  Everybody got angry because it was Anybody's job.  Anybody thought Somebody would do it, but Nobody asked Anybody to do it.  Somebody found out that the job was not done.  So Everyone blamed Anybody who blamed Somebody and so Nobody got blamed, but Somebody should have done the job.

KGC CLASSIC:
January 7, 1989 -  Stage Extension:
Added to the stage, this improvement was first used on December 15, 1988 by the Admirals State Band.  Cooperative volunteers contributed their expertise and talents to make this project happen.  Jack Jerome volunteered his master designer talents and brought the idea from the drawing board to reality.  His woodworking skills are unbelievable and one needs to view his many accomplishments to really realize the capabilities he has to offer.  Once the stage had been designed, many hours were needed to measure, saw, drill, screw, hammer and paint before construction of the extension finished.  This is a remarkable example of what can be done with cooperative volunteers.  Some of the people who had a hand in the project, headed by Esco Richter, are:  Steve Bache, Ray Begin, Bob Langenbacher, Tim Brewer, Dick Carlson, Jack Hedegore, Cliff Roslund, Jim Steele, Bill Storz, Max Tingel, Bus Zimmerman, and Mel Ranns.  Mel is working on a manual with exploded views and other diagrams to make assembly an easy job.  As you can see, it takes a lot of people, but look what can be accomplished from a small suggestion.

KGC CLASSIC:
January 7, 1989 -  Recycling:
December 28, 1988 found the recycling crew busy handling, 4,649 pounds of paper, 78 pounds of aluminum cans, and 22 pounds of scrap for which they brought home $102.01.  The 1988 Annual Report of this business:  We handled 87,006 pounds of newspapers, an increase over 1987 of 16,102 pounds;  2,104 pounds of cans, an increase of 478 pounds; 213 pounds of aluminum scrap, a decrease of 337 pounds.  Income: 1988, $2,162.96, an increase of $396.04 from 1987's total of $1,766.92.  I wish to thank all the volunteers who helped from January 1 to December 31 last year:  Bill Albright, Charlie Goodnow, Art Carlson, Walt Zimmerman, Tom Gray, Al Griffin, Omar Donaldson, Frank Hart, Jim Steele, Lefty Francis, Deke Palmer, Rudy Nordgren, John Bass, Marcel Buyl, Lyle Pfeifer, Jack Hedegore and Esco Richter.         ---Bill Storz

MEMORIAL DAY:   About 140 residents and guests celebrated Memorial Day with a "Parade of the States" and potluck dinner.  The unrehearsed parade was fun with many marchers dressed to commemorate their home states.  Tom and Joan Potts brought a member of the armed services to play God Bless America on the trumpet in the parade.  The State tables were creatively decorated by:  Joan Potts - Connecticut; Sandy McIntyre - Indiana; Ruth & Don Paulson - Massachusetts; Bev & Jim Purkey - Michigan; Eleanor Barth and Carole Weber - New York; Mary Lou Richmond and Claire Becker - Ohio; Gigi Conway - Pennsylvania; and Nip & Jackie Barker - Texas.
Thanks to the men who worked grilling, serving, icing down drinks, and many other jobs:  Tom Weber, Chuck McIntyre, Norm Aubry, Bill Barth, Jim Prentice, and Tom Conway.  Thanks, too, to the women who worked to make the party successful:  Joan Aubry, Eleanor Barth, Loretta Brian, Mary Jane Christopherson, Gigi Conway, Marge Fulgoni, Ann Kellum, Ellie Lambiotte, Joan Potts, Mary Lou Richmond, Carole Weber, Margaret Zepp, and anyone else who pitched in to help.   Special thanks go to Don Lambiotte for leading the Parade and for saying the blessing.   Pictures are available by clicking here. You can tell family and friends to go to the KGC web site at www.kgc.cc, click on What's New, and click on the 5/30/05 entry to see the photos.                 --- Sandy McIntyre

THANK YOU:   The Memorial Day Potluck was a great success.  We all had a lot of fun!  A big thank you to Chuck and Sandy McIntyre for hosting this event.  The hamburgers and hot dogs, grilled by Chuck and his crew, and all the carry-in dishes brought by the residents really made for a tasty evening.  The "Parade of the States" and the State table decorations were very impressive.  All in all, it was a very delightful event.

HEALTHLINE:   Trudy Graney of 259 Camelot Dr., was in the hospital in Michigan for testing.  Cards would be welcome at their home in Michigan.  Their address is: 10300 North Drive, St. Clair Shores, MI 48082, their home phone is: 586-294-0989.

KGC TELEPHONE DIRECTORY CORRECTION:   Paul and Trudy Graney's northern city should be listed as St. Clair Shores instead of only St. Clair.

FORMER RESIDENT NEWS:   We learned this week of the death of long-time resident Phyllis McMullen. An exceptionally friendly person, Phyllis was active in many KGC activities, especially card-playing. Here is the text of the letter received from her family:
Dear Friends,
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of our mother on May 22nd. She died peacefully with family at her side. The past couple of months she had been experiencing many mini-strokes and hospice was called in. They were wonderful and helped keep Mom comfortable until the end.
Our family will take both Mom's and Dad's ashes to the McMullen plot in Akron, Ohio, where they will be buried together.
All of you have been such loyal friends to both Mom and Dad over the years. The three of us are very appreciative of that friendship. We knew you would want to know about our Mom.
  Sincerely,
Penny McMullen McNees, Alan and Norman McMullen

SENIOR DRESS CODE:   Many of us "Old Folks" (those over 60, WAY over 60, or hovering near 60) are quite confused about how we should present ourselves.  We're unsure about the kind of image we are projecting and whether or not we are correct as we try to conform to current fashions.  Despite what you may have seen on the streets, the following combinations DO NOT go together and should be avoided:
1.   A nose ring and bifocals
2.   Spiked hair and bald spots
3.   A pierced tongue and dentures
4.   Miniskirts and support hose
5.   Ankle bracelets and corn pads
6.   Speedo's and cellulite
7.   A belly button ring and a gall bladder surgery scar
8.   Midriff shirts and a midriff bulge
9.   Unbuttoned disco shirts and a heart monitor
10.  Bikinis and liver spots
11.  Short shorts and varicose veins
12.  Inline skates and a walker
And last, but not least……..
13.  Thongs and Depends
Please keep these basic guidelines foremost in your mind when you shop.  Animated Smiley Face

NEWS FROM THE OFFICE:   Now that the rainy season has begun, grass is growing faster than in the winter/spring.  When it rains all week as it did last week and Greenscape, the landscape company, cannot do its job, the next cutting will cause clumps and missed spots as many of you have experienced.  We know this results in unsightly places in your lawns.  We will continue to push Greenscape to do a better job but this time of year we all have to expect some problems from time to time.
Reminder...When the ground is very wet, please do not park on the grass.  The tire tracks may not go away.

NEW OWNER:   Welcome to new owners Jerry and Leanna Robinson.  They have purchased 98 King Arthur Drive.  They also own 303 Avenue of Dukes.  Hope you enjoy your new home.

RESIDENT NEWS:   Our sympathy goes out to Mickey and Gene Fournier upon the death of her father, in Massachusetts. They, along with the rest of their family, certainly gave the utmost in his care during his last years, and we hope now to see the Fourniers be able to spend more time at King's Gate again. Cards may be sent to the address in our phone book.

RESIDENT NEWS:   Sue Cavallo is now living in Harbor Chase of Venice, and says she would like visitors and that cards will always be welcome.

FLEA MARKET:   To all the new residents and anyone needing to replace items, the flea market has donated items available for sale through the year.  There are items such as lamps, toasters, coffee pots, etc.  We accept items all year, and if anyone is moving into the club and needs something, or if anyone is moving out and has some things that they want to donate, please contact us.  Contacts for the next couple of months are, Dee Hicks, and Shirley Froehlich, and we will arrange with you a convenient time to show you what is available for sale or, when moving, when we may pick up your donated items.

JULY CALENDAR:   If an activity chairperson has any changes for the July Calendar, they should be forwarded to Joanie Grubaugh at 65 King Arthur, jackandjo@comcast.net or 480-9174 by June 28th. You may also, pick up a copy of the current month calendar in the rack in the Clubhouse.

HINT FOR YOUR GOOD HEALTH:   Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify.  Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster.  The stroke victim may suffer brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.  Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

If he or she has trouble with any of these tasks, call 9-1-1 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.
After discovering that a group of non-medical volunteers could identify facial weakness, arm weakness and speech problems, researchers urged the general public to learn the three questions.  They presented their conclusions at the American Stroke Association's annual meeting last February.  Widespread use of this test could result in prompt diagnosis and treatment of the stroke and prevent brain damage.

Dear King's Gaters:
Thank you very much for your kind words concerning my mother.  We would like for any donations to be made to Pinebrook Rehab and Nursing Ctr, 1240 Pinebrook Road, Venice, FL 34285. Mother was there for about six years and they took such good care of her.
