NEW ARTICLE:   We are going to interview KGC residents at random and learn about some of their interesting life experiences.   The first article follows:

A RESIDENT REMINISCES - MEL RANNS:   Mel and his wife, Jean, purchased their first lot in the Club in 1979 and moved here in January, 1986.   Mel was born in Canada, then went to England and grew up there.   After WWII, he and Jean were married in 1949 and moved to Canada.   He was a Tool Designer in London, Ont. for three years.   He then was interviewed in Detroit and was employed by Ford Motors designing and testing machinery.   Mel and Jean became U.S. citizens after five years and their neighbors had a big spread to celebrate the event.   Mel said he spent time in air-raid shelters in England.   He attended the Ipswich School of Engineering in England.   One of the things I most remember about Mel and Jean is their love of dancing - for many years they attended almost all of the Club dances.   They have a son and a daughter, and five grandsons.   Mel says he has many happy memories of the Club.   Following are some of his memories:   Building the wall - assessed $139 per household.   Luminaries started in 1987 by Bill Hufford.   Designing the entrance - waterfall, etc.   A project for a washroom, toilet, etc. by the trash area was laid out and rejected.   The accident on Hwy 75 at the Shakett Bridge and how rapidly the work was done to get this bridge open again.   The Boat Launch project was done by Jack Hedegore.   He says numerous improvements for the Club were done by Eric Hazeldine.   The first entertainment brought into the Club was booked by Vic Hill and was always first class.   The Ranns lived first at 80 King Arthur Drive and he said he remembers building a dock and seawall.   Says he wasn't alone for long and eventually there were seven men helping him.   Ernie Allsbrook was an excellent Caller for Square Dancing.   Mel says they found the Club by staying at the RV Park.   He says after 21 years here, they still love it, although they are not as active as they were in the beginning.   He especially likes it that there were people of all professions here and everyone was willing to share their expertise to benefit the Club (and that is still true today).   Mel knows much about the Club history, so if you get a chance, visit with him.   Thanks, Mel, for sharing some of your memories with us.

THOUGHTS:   Our Annual KGC Fair is fast approaching.  If you are a new resident and have never worked on Fair Day, sign up now - its fun!  And, of course, long-time residents and renters are encouraged to work, too.       ---SJB
